The unique and varied terrain of Wisconsin’s Ice Age National Scenic Trail highlights the state’s unique glacial history. One of just 11 National scenic trails in the United States, The Ice Age National Scenic Trail encompasses over 1000 miles and 28 counties throughout the state. Segments that pass through Kettle Moraine State Forest in southern Wisconsin are among my favorite to hike – in any season! The Stoney Ridge Segment in southern Wisconsin provides a beautiful setting for a winter hike!

Glacial History of Wisconsin

Sculpted by receding glaciers over 12,000 years ago, the state of Wisconsin is home to a variety of landscapes. Rolling hills, bluffs, agricultural land, woodlands and prairies rich with native plants are some examples. Visitors from across the country hike, snowshoe, and even cross-country ski (in some segments!) through the diverse landscapes of this beautiful trail.

Stoney Ridge Segment

Located in Waukesha County, the Stoney Ridge segment of the Ice Age Trail extends from State Highway 59 to County Highway Z. Stoney Ridge passes through 3.1-miles of oak forest, pine plantation, and numerous dry prairies. Native grasses and plants such as lead plant, butterfly milkweed, asters, goldenrod, big bluestem, and prairie dropseed can be observed in the summer months.

You can access the Stoney Ridge segment at the Kettle Moraine Southern Unit headquarters at S91W39091 WI-59, Eagle, WI 53119. The segment passes directly through the headquarters and visitor center. Stop at headquarters for a trail map. Additionally, check out  interpretive exhibits on glacial moraines, kettles, kames, and eskers found throughout the Kettle Moraine State Forest.

Scenic Ice Age Trail Beauty | Stoney Ridge

While numerous other segments of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail in this area are equally scenic, diverse, and challenging to hike, Stoney Ridge is one of my favorite segments during winter.  Enjoy a variety of landscapes, hilly terrain, open prairies, and pine plantations of the Kettle Moraine State Forest. There are an abundance of natural wonders to enjoy!

The Ice Age Trail is also beautiful in the spring season as the spring ephemerals emerge. If youโ€™re interested in hiking the segments of the IAT that pass through the Kettle Moraine State Forest, read on for more information in my blog post: Kettle Moraine State Forest | 3 Beautiful Spring Wildflower Hikes.

Get out there and enjoy this beautiful hike on the Ice Age National Scenic Trail!
