As a lifelong Midwesterner, I’ve experienced the beauty of the four seasons – sometimes all in one day! From ice and snowy conditions to hot, humid summer days, the perfect gear exists for every activity. In order to enjoy outdoor recreation in all seasons, it’s important to have clothing and gear that is not only comfortable, but well made, durable, and functional.

Gear Recommendations

Below I share more about the clothing and gear that works for me. Here you’ll find my personal recommendations for outdoor gear, from my favorite packs, hiking layers, insulation, biking gear, and outdoor accessories.

Vests and Insulated Layers

I am a big fan of vests to maintain a warm core. Marmot’s Women’s Echo Featherless Vest is lightweight yet warm without being bulky. This vest is water resistant and durable, with zippered pockets and a drawstring cord to block out the cold. It is light enough to wear on its own or layer beneath a shell. A personal favorite of mine!

Another favorite vest of mine is Smartwool’s Smartloft Vest. With a merino wool lining, this vest is warm yet breathable, wind and water resistant. I have worn this vest to hike, bike, run, ski and snowshoe. For the weight, this vest is amazingly warm, and layers easily beneath a shell or over a baselayer.

For hiking activities during the shoulder seasons, a softshell jacket is a great option for comfort on the move without too much warmth. Marmot’s Tempo Softshell Jacket has zippered chest and hand pockets, a bit of stretch, and is water repellent. This jacket packs down small to store in your pack. A lightweight, breathable layer without the bulk!

Osprey Packs | Sustainable Design, Durable Wear

For a comfortable, sustainably made pack, Osprey packs are my go to. For a well-fitting, durable and functional pack for an activity of any type, I’m confident that Osprey has the pack for you. In the past ten years, I have purchased five Osprey packs – both for work and recreation. Each pack has not only met my needs, but exceeded my expectations. Osprey’s focus on sustainable design includes an investment in recycled fabrics, water repellent treatment made without PFAs, and reduced environmental impact.

Multi-Sport Packs

My go to pack for day hikes and long rides is Osprey’s Talon 11, with an adjustable hip-belt, two water bottle compartments and mesh front pocket (pictured after a muddy bike ride below). Considered a multi-sport pack, the Talon has a comfortable fit with plenty of room for an extra layer and snacks for the trail. My favorite feature of the Talon and other Osprey packs is the curved Airscape backpanel designed for comfort and ventilation.

The Talon is also available in a slightly larger 22L pack. The Talon 22 was rated Best Overall by Gear Junkie in 2026.

Biking Specific Packs

When I want to travel light for long trail rides, I carry my Kitsuma 3L hydration pack. The Kitsuma is a lightweight, minimalistic pack with a low profile, 2.5L external water reservoir, and a bit of extra room to transport extra snacks or a light layer. For something a bit larger, I recommend the Raptor 10 with 2.5L water reservoir, hip-belt pockets and shoulder harness. Explore Osprey’s Raptor/Raven collection here.

Lumbar Packs

If a lumbar pack suits your needs, the Savu 5 includes zippered hipbelt pockets and snap-in-place water bottle sleeves that can be tucked away. This is the perfect minimalist biking pack. A second option is the Seral 7, with a 1.5L water reservoir, and room for a spare tube and patch kit.

Biking Frame and Tube Packs

If you’re looking for a bit of extra storage space on your rides, Osprey’s Escapist Top Tube Bag features a cable exit port for charging, variable attachment points with anti-scratch hook-and-loop straps, waterproof zippers. I like the smaller size and minimal profile of this pack.

Everyday/Lifestyle Packs

Off the trails, I carry the Arcane Tote Pack for my laptop and other accessories. I love this tote! It is minimalist in its styling, featuring tuckaway straps and a shoulder strap that converts to a backpack. It also has a 16″ padded laptop sleeve, internal zip pocket, key clip, and large zippered front panel pocket. The black color does not show wear and tear, but this tote is also available in sandy gray, and orange.
