The Land of Enchantment
Each time I visit New Mexico, I am reminded why the state is known as the Land of Enchantment. New Mexico is home to a range of scenic landscapes including high plains, deserts, and mountains. The contrast of these landscapes, combined with vibrant sunsets help the state live up to its name.  The traditions of Hispanic and Native Americans add culture and color to the region. Santa Fe and Albuquerque showcase these unique cultures.
New Mexico is enchanting – and fascinating! At Capulin Volcano National Monument you’ll experience vast views over 8,100 feet in elevation, unique wildlife, and a fascinating landscape that paints a vivid picture of the geologic past. I highly recommend a visit!

Hiking at Capulin Volcano | Crater Rim Trail
Capulin’s Crater Rim Trail is a must! At the top of Volcano Road, you’ll find a parking lot with access to the trail. At just 1 mile in length, this aptly named trail traces the crater’s rim. The uphill and downhill sections are a bit challenging. The Crater Rim Trail provides gorgeous views of the surrounding area (see photos below) and the center of the crater. This is definitely worth your time; I encourage you to check it out!

Capulin Volcano | Wildlife
As you explore the park, you may see resident mule deer. An ornate tree lizard greeted me on the Crater Rim Trail as well! New Mexico’s native wildflowers are found throughout the trail, adding to the beauty of the park.

A Unique Experience
I was impressed and surprised by my visit to Capulin. Millions of years ago, Capulin Volcano and the Raton-Clayton volcanic field were an entirely different landscape. If you have an interest in geology and Earth history, you will enjoy this fascinating monument.
In recent years, my travel has been mostly focused within the Great Lakes region. The western United States has an appeal that calls to me. Coming from the relatively flat lands of the Upper Midwest, it is always a treat to take in the vast, open landscapes that the western U.S. has to offer. I would highly recommend visiting Capulin Volcano National Monument!
